El Kabayo Restaurant

On our way back to NLEX, we decided to have something that's not fast food. Since we're "Southeners", we opted for "native" dishes from Pampanga. We noticed cars lined up at the parking lot and thought maybe that's what were looking for, inspite of the "catchy" name.

While in the car, the first thing that came in my mind was maybe they serve horses such as tapang kabayo on their menu... I hesitated because I do not eat anything exotic. Second, that it may not be an animal-friendly establishment which could be a big problem 'cause we're traveling with our dog. My boyfriend inquired first so he walked back with a couple of good news - first, that they (the owners) love their horses so much that they cannot afford to kill them (and eat them!). Second, that we can tag our furry baby along since one of their friends have a pet inside, too. Wasn't that great?

The whole restaurant was cowboy-inspired, we even saw a cowboy in full costume! I thought that was funny-cool at the same time. Then came the lady in boots, and handed us the menu. Well, there wasn't too many to choose from and so we picked one of their best sellers which is sisig (uhm, okay, that's native. Period. ;)) with rice. It came with some corn and carrots, too.

What can I say? It was savory even if it mainly consisted of white onions and deep-fried pork only. There must be a secret ingredient. Among everything that was served, just one thing I (sort of) disliked was their semi-puto rice. I like rice that's well-cooked and not too sticky. Pero kanya-kanyang taste 'yan. You might like it the way it is.

After we ate we got the chance to speak with the owner, Ms. Rina Villavicencio, the lady in boots I was talking about in the upper part of this blog. She took time to share stories like we knew each other well. She was also very kind to let us speak with her husband, whom she calls the Sheriff, the cowboy himself...

Just like his wife, the Sheriff was also very accommodating. Initially we thought he was an American guy because of his Mestizo looks, but when he started talking, (in my mind I said) "Ah okay, nagta-Tagalog naman pala sya." Hahaha. He's so fun to look at, especially that we know he's enjoying and living his dream of making a cowboy town. At least he's got a good start!

They have reasonably priced viands (our bill was only around Php 300+ including drinks) that may be shared by 2-3 people. They have a short list of special meals that may also serve as pulutan to those who plan to visit for a drinking spree.

Before I forget, they have a wide space for horse-back riding just in case you're in for adventure.

Visit their place at Gil Puyat Avenue corner Panday Pira Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga.

* I am not, in any way, related to the owner/s, if you plan to make reservations for anything -- especially on their horse back riding thingy, you may personally send them an email or visit their web site. Thank you! *
